It shows us also how much these two characters will interact, as within the entire world they are the only 2 humanoid characters, unless you count the ghosts that are seen trying to get the fish. 
The backside commemorates this historic 40 year anniversary, with the 0 showing off the mysterious floating egg that is seen several times throughout.
